Many
people think that sound will only pass through air. In fact it can be
transmitted via solids such as concrete
or liquid such as water - hence the echo finding methods of submarines
where ‘pings’ of sound are sent out and bounce back from other
solid objects. ‘Sound
through your head’ is the name of an exhibit at London’s
Science Museum. When visitors lightly bite onto a vibrating rod, they
‘hear’ sound because it is transmitted through the bone of
their heads.
