About Catalyst

The science magazine for students aged 14-19 years. Catalyst has been published since 1990 and past issues are available from as far back as volume 13.

Published 4 times each academic year: October, December, February and April.

A variety of science articles in every issue

With a variety of articles in each issue, Catalyst magazine has something for everyone. Each issue contains four major articles typically covering physics, chemistry and biology. These major articles are usually linked to current developments and are often written by the scientists or engineers involved. The fourth article is cross-disciplinary and shows how science research often calls upon experts across all disciplines.

Shorter articles look at the broader issues in science, science-related careers and ideas for experiments that teachers can use in the classroom and students can try at home.

There is also an inspiring centre-spread image in each issue with an accompanying explanatory article. These images are often pulled out by teachers or students and used as posters.

Using Catalyst to enhance secondary science teaching

All articles in the Catalyst archive are related to some aspect of the science curriculum. Teachers have used Catalyst in the classroom in a wide range of ways and have found it to be a valuable teaching resource. Some of these tried and tested ways can be found in the SEP booklet ‘Using Catalyst magazine: scientists and how they work’.

Volumes 1-17 of Catalyst: Secondary Science Review were published by Phillip Allan Updates. Volumes 18 onwards have been published by SEP who continue to be the current publishers of Catalyst: Secondary Science Review. Volumes 13-17 are available online on the National STEM Centre website, in addition to all volumes published by SEP.
